Collins Construction  was born in Arlington, VA in 1985. The wood deck industry in the Washington, DC area was exploding at the time and with the topography of rolling hills at the foot of the Shenandoah mountains, just about every home had or needed a deck, sun room, gazebo.

The new home construction boom was in full swing, and within a couple short years Collins Construction grew to 5 crews that were building over 30 decks per month in Fairfax, Mclean, Langley, Great Falls, Mount Vernon, Potomac, Chevy Chase, Rockville and NW Washington DC.  We had a great mix of customers, from our friends and  neighbors to  Many folks that you might have seen in the media to Foreign Ambassadors. It was a fantastic experience and an ideal setting to learn about architecture, design, and human nature. We had the distinctive honor of being chosen to restore a very expansive and highly elevated deck on a home designed by Frank Llyod Wright in Great Falls, VA.

In 1992 the founder’s father had a stroke and needed a family member to care for him at his home in St. Pete Beach.  As well as the business was going in  the Nation’s Capital, family came first and Collins Construction packed up and  moved to the west coast of Florida. In May of 1993, Dean Collins Construction Inc. opened it’s doors with a brand new Florida Contractor’s License. To this day, 22 years later, we’ve never received a complaint. We lost count of the number of decks and shade structures, docks, boardwalks built or remodeled after the 3000 mark, but we haven’t lost touch with our customers and the importance of building quality into each and every project.

Collins Construction has been a leader in the industry. We were the first contractor in the State of FL to install composite decking when the Trex® company first brought there revolutionary product to the market in 1993. First to install Weyerhaeuser Choicedek® in 1994, We were the first  to use hidden fasteners (deck clips) in 1984. Also the first to use belt fed screw guns in 1993.

Collins Construction was invited to consult  with several  early composite manufacturing  companies, in the early to mid ‘90’s, to advise them on market trends, colors, textures, and application of composite material. Trex Co. and Weatherbest  sent professional photographers to photograph our decks for their  decking brochures, as well as magazine ads, articles, and TV commercials. Three Television commercials featured our decks and one had our founder as a spokesperson.

Collins Construction also appeared on HGTV building a deck and a PBS program by the name of  “At Garden’s Gate”. Collins Construction has been featured in Deck Builder Magazine, and has been featured regularly in the Tampa Tribune (formally the Saint Pete Times).
